Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse

This book design for the 1992 novel Siddhartha uses
Buddhist and Hindu patterns to represent the theme of
oneness that is present throughout the story.

The front cover and each chapter begin with cutouts in a variety of shapes that reveal the patterns below. These patterns are also featured on the edge of each page as a method of delineating each chapter, even when the book is closed. The effect created also mimics that of a flowing river, which is a prominent image throughout Siddhartha representing life itself, time, and the path to enlightenment.
